the Seattle Public Library. Pam sent the above photo from her trip. Did you know that
the library was established in 1890 and has grown to include the Central Library and
26 branches! The current library (see above) was designed and opened in 2004. In 2007,
the building was voted #108 on the American Institute of Architects's list of Americans'
150 favorite American structures.
There were 2 library buildings that preceded the current one. The above home of
Henry Vessler housed the public library that burned in 1901 -- taking the entire
adult collection with it, except for the 5,000 volumes that were checked out. In
1905 Andrew Carnegie donated $200,000 to build a new Seattle Library, he also
donated funds to establish area library branches.
