the Amy Lowell poem Decade --- our main character Nell Stone found meaning and referred to
this poem several times in the book.
The poem's central idea -- "of feelings for a lover changing from the sweet, almost
painful intensity of red wine into the blissful satisfaction of bread" - was briefly discussed.
At the end of book group, a member shared the actual poem with me; and, I share it with
everyone here:
A Decade BY AMY LOWELL
When you came, you were like red wine and honey,
And the taste of you burnt my mouth with its sweetness.
Now you are like morning bread,
Smooth and pleasant.
I hardly taste you at all for I know your savour,
But I am completely nourished.
Published in 1919.
Our next discussion book for Thursday, February 2nd is:
"Empty Mansions - the Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark & the Spending of a
Great American Fortune"
by Bill Dedman.
Check back as I will be posting author and book background information for our
