offering resources for book clubs. Book Club Central was created in partnership with
librarians to provide readers with the very best in reading suggestions.
The Honorary Chairperson is Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP), who will suggest a quarterly book
club pick, promoting books and literacy. Her debut selection is: No One is Coming to Save
Us: A Novel by Stephanie Powell Watts - an exploration of the American Dream among African
Americans in the South. Kirkus Reviews stated, "The Great Gatsby is revived in an
accomplished debut novel...Watts spins a compelling tale of obsessive love and dashed
dreams set in a struggling North Carolina town." SJP will recommend another selection this Fall.
Thus far, 11 books are featured in Book Club Central's recommendations.

In an interview with Sarah Jessica Parker (American Libraries, June 2017):
"My mother is a devoted reader. She drove carpools for many years, and she always
had an open book in her lap, so at traffic lights she could read. And there was a rule in
our house that you never left the house without a book..."
And...
"I just read whenever I can. I love the subway in New York City for that reason, and
until recently, we didn't have Wi-Fi underground in the city, so reading was fantastic,
because you could really stop the emails and phone calls. I still consider the subway in
some ways the best place to get reading done..."
Additionally....
"...an actor's life on a set involves a nice amount of waiting so I read in between
takes. I've tucked books inside costumes on my person. I've found ways of folding
The New York Times and The New Yorker beneath corsets, so when someone yells
"Cut!," I can pull them out and read. I spent six months in a flying harness for Hocus
Pocus, and I always had a book, even in the air.......But when we're traveling for a long
time, primarily for family holidays, I've learned to try to get everything on a Kindle. It's
not my first choice, but I'm grateful for the convenience of it."
My first generation Kindle died last month; and, recently I replaced and updated with an
Amazon Paperwhite E-reader. As with all technology, there is vast improvement with
this latest Kindle ---this one has a touch screen! And an adjustable light! I identify with SJP
in her interview - I dislike being caught without a book within reach. I prefer a physical
book in my hand, but I love to travel with an entire library at my fingertips, light and portable.
Haven't tried an E-reader yet? Did you know the CIDLibrary offers 6 Kindle Paperwhites
available for checkout? Currently there are 3 available at the Circulation Desk, for a listing
of the multitudes of books loaded onto this small device, check here:

Summer continues to entice and enrapt. I'm lulled into book chocolate, the beach read.
I've discovered the author Elin Hilderbrand, and have fallen into an alternative life,
a summer escape to Nantucket Island via armchair traveling. Please pass me another
book.......and disconnect the phone.......
