took flight 10 years later with her fifth published book, Celestial Navigation. She has now
authored 21 books, her latest A Spool of Blue Thread is our chosen contemporary fiction
selection -- discussion on March 2nd.
Nearly all of Tyler's novels are set in Baltimore, where she lives, and nearly all center around
marriage and family life. In an interview, Anne Tyler says of the Whitshanks, her main characters in A Spool of Blue Thread: "Like most families, They imagined they were special."
Anne Tyler's breakthrough novel Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1982) was shortlisted
for America's three biggest literary awards. Her next novel The Accidental Tourist was made into
a film starring William Hurt and Geena Davis. This novel was followed by Breathing Lessons
which earned her the 1989 Pulitzer Prize.
A Spool of Blue Thread was nominated for the Man Booker Prize and the Andrew Carnegie
Medal for Excellence in Fiction Longlist in 2016.
