Go Set a Watchman could make for an interesting discussion,
comparing the strengths and weaknesses of these 2 novels.
To Kill a Mockingbird unfolds as a coming of age story for Scout; and it
is also a story of Atticus. In Go Set a Watchman, we revisit Scout at
age 26 returning from New York to visit her aging father, Atticus.
Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political
turmoil - Scout reexamines the Southern way of life and realizes that the world is nothing like what she thought it was.
The book is over 900 pages long, and is considered to be Follett's greatest novel.
The location is England in the Middle Ages, a story about injustice, love, religion and
ancient architecture. The building of a cathedral is at the center of the
drama; around the site of construction Follett weaves a story of betrayal, revenge and love. The book would be a heavy time commitment, and because of its length, we would have June, July and August in which to read it. Not
exactly a light beach read - there was a lot of rape in the 1100's.
The book traces the development of medieval Gothic architecture amid
the fortunes of the monastery & the village against the backdrop of historical events at the time.
