located in Petoskey, the quaint city that cozies up to beautiful Lake Michigan. I am talking about
McLean & Eakin Booksellers, where I love the selection, the friendly staff, the books,
the coffee, the yellow chair! And the events! (more on this later....) But first, back to Literati
Bookstore......
Literati Bookstore opened on March 31, 2003 created by a husband and wife team, Hilary & Mike Gustafson. It all began with the closing of Borders Bookstores, in particular the first Borders store in downtown Ann Arbor. Literati rose from the demise of Borders and
is located within a few blocks from the University of Michigan's campus in downtown Ann Arbor.
Did you know...
Literati offers a typewriter and a chair, and invites the public to type a note. A blank page
on which to share a thought, an insight, an observation. Thousands of notes have been
collected and the favorites have been complied into a book "Notes from a Public Typewriter"
published by Grand Central Publishing. Here is a description of the book:
"When Michael Gustafson and his wife Hilary opened Literate Bookstore in
Ann Arbor, Michigan, they put out a typewriter for anyone to use. They had no
idea what to expect. Would people ask metaphysical questions? Write mean things?
Pour their souls onto the page? Yes, no, and did they ever."
"Every day, people of all ages sit down at the public typewriter. Children perch
atop grandparents' knees, both sets of hands hovering above the metal keys:
I LOVE YOU. Others walk in alone on Friday nights and confess their hopes: I will
find someone someday. And some leave funny asides for the next person who sits
down: I dislike people, misanthropes, irony, and ellipses...and lists too."
Now for a moment, let me return to McLean & Eakin's in Petoskey. Another thing I love
